What did the four rounds actually look like?
He opened with a bogey-free 11-under 61 that broke the JCB course record of 62, set four years earlier at a Legends Tour event when the layout also played to par 72. Nine birdies and an eagle, including a 47-and-a-half-foot eagle putt on the par-5 10th. He had a look at 59 and parred the last two.
Then 66. Then a comparatively pedestrian 69 on Saturday, which was the only day the field had a chance to do anything about him and didn't. Then a closing 10-under 62.
That's the detail worth pausing on. Most runaway wins end with the leader shuffling home in 70 and letting the clock run out. Herbert put his foot down on Sunday from a position where he had absolutely no reason to.
Is this really the lowest winning score in LIV history?
Technically yes. Practically, it needs an asterisk, and I haven't seen anyone put one on it.
LIV moved from 54-hole to 72-hole events starting with the 2026 season, abandoning the three-day format the league was literally named after. So Herbert had 18 more holes than any winner from 2022 through 2025 to accumulate a number.
Which means "lowest winning score in LIV Golf League history" is comparing a four-round score against three-round scores. It's a real record in the sense that it's the lowest figure in the record book. It just isn't the achievement the phrase implies, and every LIV winner this season is going to keep "breaking" it against the old format.
The genuinely impressive numbers are the ones the format change doesn't distort much: 30 birdies, and the fact that he beat a full LIV field by six.
For his own reference point, Herbert won his first LIV title at Virginia in May, going wire-to-wire at 24 under, four clear of Sergio García. That was 54 holes. Same player, same season, same dominance.

On the team side, Ripper GC took the title, with Legion XIII second at 48 under and Crushers GC third at 42 under.
Where does this sit in Herbert's year?
It's the back half of the best stretch of his career, and the timing is brutal.
At The Open at Royal Birkdale a week earlier, Herbert shot a bogey-free 28 on the front nine — tying the best nine-hole score in major championship history — on his way to an 8-under 62 that equalled the lowest 18-hole score ever recorded at a major. He finished tied for sixth, his best major result. He led at halfway.
So in the space of nine days he tied a major scoring record, missed a putt on 18 that would have made it his alone, held a major lead, and then went and broke a course record and a league record. The 62 at Birkdale is the one that will still be in the books in 30 years. The 30 under is the one he'll remember winning.
Worth noting: Herbert has now won on six different tours across six countries. That's a strange, well-travelled career for a 30-year-old from Bendigo.

Ignore the record-book stuff for a second. The thing worth watching here is a guy who's spent his whole career being described as talented and streaky finally stringing five weeks together. That's the hard part. Anyone can shoot 61 once — Herbert's problem was never a low round, it was the follow-up. This week he shot 61 and then didn't disappear, which is a different skill and a rarer one. If he shows up at the next major still doing this, the "LIV guy who shot 62 at Birkdale" line stops being a fun footnote.
