What happened, round by round

He opened with a bogey-free 11-under 61 — nine birdies and an eagle — which broke the JCB course record of 62. He then said, with the flat delivery Australians reserve for this sort of thing, that if he'd been picking a day to shoot 59 he wouldn't have picked that one, given how firm the course was playing and how the breeze kept switching.

Friday: 66, out to a four-shot lead at 17 under. Saturday: 69 in the worst conditions of the week, with gusts forecast into the thirties and the field's scoring average climbing about half a stroke. Lead down to three, with DeChambeau in the group.

Sunday: 62.

That last number is the one I'd point at. Most players who lead by three on a Sunday shoot 69, shake hands, and take the trophy. Herbert had no competitive reason to shoot 62 and shot it anyway.

About that record

Here's the thing that no coverage I read mentioned.

LIV moved from 54-hole events to 72-hole events for the 2026 season. The league announced it on 4 November 2025 — every event now runs four rounds instead of three, partly in pursuit of Official World Golf Ranking recognition, partly because players wanted something closer to major preparation. It's in LIV's own newsroom.

So Herbert's 30-under total is being compared, in LIV's record book, against winning scores compiled over 18 fewer holes. He had an extra round to accumulate strokes under par. Every LIV winner this season has the same advantage, which means this "record" is going to keep falling all year against a set of numbers that no longer describes the same competition.

It's a real record-book entry. It isn't evidence that Herbert played better than any previous LIV winner, and the phrase implies that it is.

I also tried to find out what the previous lowest winning score actually was, so I could tell you by how much it fell. I couldn't find a reliable figure. Which tells you something — if the number were easy to find, the outlets running the record as a headline would presumably have included it.

What holds up regardless of format: he won by six, and he broke the course record on Thursday. Neither of those gets bigger because you add a round.

Who chased him

Hatton, playing at home, closed with a 63 for second and was gracious about it — proud of how he played, said it would have been something to win in front of home fans, and called Herbert incredible this week.

DeChambeau closed with a 68 for solo third at 21 under, extending a good run that started at The Open. Cameron Smith took solo fourth at 17 under. On the team board, Ripper GC won it, with Legion XIII second at 48 under and Crushers GC third at 42 under.

The Open connection

A week earlier at Royal Birkdale, Herbert shot a 62 that tied the major championship scoring record, and finished tied for sixth — his best result in a major.

So inside nine days: a 62 that ties one of golf's genuinely hard records, a course record, and a six-shot win. The Birkdale 62 is the one that will still be in the books when he's fifty. The 30 under is the one he got a trophy for.

I don't say this to take anything off him. Six shots is six shots, and the guy has been the best player in world golf for the last fortnight regardless of which tour you're watching. But "lowest winning score in league history" is the kind of line a promoter writes and everyone else copies, and it happens to be the one number in this story that got easier this year. The 62 at Birkdale is worth more than the 30 under, and it isn't close. If you're going to remember one thing about Lucas Herbert's July, remember that one.
